“The carnation does not drop its petals but hugs them to its heart as it dies, and so, too, mothers hug their children to their hearts, their mother love never dying."
Carnation means fascination, distinction, and love; they signify purity, faith, adoration, beauty, and charity. According to a Christian legend, carnations grew from the Virgin Mary's tears as she watched Jesus carry the cross. This is how they became associated with motherly love. (And although this legend might be false on a factual, scientific level, it speaks of the alchemical process that turns suffering into beauty for the person who accepts it.)
